Twisted Hat

Twisted hat. Free crochet pattern.

This pattern can be used to make a hat of any size from baby to adult. I haven't add sizes to my pattern so you need to how big to make each part. If you are unsure of hat sizes a simple internet search of "crochet hat size chart" will bring up lots of charts.

This pattern can also be made with any type of yarn you prefer, or have at hand!
To give you an idea I used Worsted weight yarn (US 4) and a 4.5mm hook. The adult hat used 50g of white.

This pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Stitches used:

Hdc: Half double crochet. For this pattern only stitch into the 2 back loops.

  1. Insert hook into the "V" of the stitch, leaving the front loop free and the back loop over the hook.
  2. Insert hook under the back bar of the stitch.
Fpdc: Front post double crochet. To make the coloured stripes the bottom half of these stitches are done in the stripe colour (yellow or blue) and the top of the stitch in the background colour (white). Here is how:
  1. When you start this stitch you should have 1 white loop on your hook (after doing the previous hdc).
  2. Let go of the white yarn and bring the blue yarn straight up from the previous round. (When starting with a colour pull the tail of the yarn through the top of the hat and work as if it is coming up from previous round).
  3. Yarn over with the blue.
  4. Insert hook around front of the post
  5. Yarn over with the blue and pull loop under the post.
  6. Yarn over with the blue and pull loop through the 2 other blue loops on the hook.
  7. Drop the blue yarn and pick up the white.
  8. Yarn over with the white and pull through both loops (blue and white) on the hook.

Hat:

Start with a magic circle.
Rnd 1. Ch 2 (does NOT count as hdc). 6 hdc into circle (do not join). (6 hdc)

Rnd 2. 2 hdc into the 2 back loops of each hdc. (12 hdc)

Rnd 3. *1 fpdc. 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from *. (6 fpdc + 12 hdc). [2 hdc between each fpdc]

Rnd 4. *1 fpdc. 2 hdc. 1 hdc. Repeat from *. [3 hdc between each fpdc]

Rnd 5. *1 fpdc. 2 hdc. 1 hdc. 1 hdc. Repeat from *. [4 hdc between each fpdc]

Rnd 6 to 10. Keep increasing until the hat has the correct width. Make sure to always increase JUST AFTER the fpdc.
For my baby hat I increased until I had 10 hdc between each fpdc and for my adult hat until I had 15 hdc. But this will change depending on your yarn, hook and tension.
*Note: The top of this hat doesn’t lay flat. It should be like a cone.

Rnd 11 to 20. Once you have the correct width just keep going around (1 fpdc. 1 hdc. 1 hdc...) until the hat has the correct height without the brim.

Twisted hat. Free crochet pattern.Rnd 21 to 27. Once you have the correct height it’s time to start the brim. The brim is done using just white and continuous hdc (still in back 2 loops). My baby hat has 1 inch for the brim and the adult hat 2 inches.

To end the continuous spiral do 2 or 3 sc stitches followed by 1 or 2 slip stitches. Cut yarn.

Edging:

The spiral edging is done using sc and chain 3. As this part is folded up you either need to work on the far side of the hat or turn the hat inside out. When you are working the inside of the hat should be towards you.
  1. Starting with Blue sc into any stitch and chain 3 (or join and chain 4). Take off hook.
  2. Change to Yellow. Sc into next stitch and chain 3 (or join and chain 4). Take off hook.
  3. Put Blue back on hook. Bring the Blue chain over (in front of) the yellow and sc into next stitch. Chain 3. Drop blue.
  4. Put yellow on hook. Bring over the Blue and sc into next stitch. Chain 3. Drop yellow.
  5. Continue this way all the way around. As long as you didn’t miss any stitches it will line up perfectly.
  6. Once you have gone all the way round cut the yarn. Using a wool needle join to 1st sc of same colour.

Now is a good time to weave in all ends. Make sure to only weave the ends into the back of the same colour.

Twisters:

Crochet twister. free patternMake 6. (I did 3 of each colour).

Chain a length you would like the twisters. For my baby hat I did 16 chains and for my adult 26. But any number will work. Skip the 1st chain from hook and place 3 hdc in each chain.

Using the 2 tails of the twisters sew them to the top of the hat.

  1. I'm a crochet newbie. Is there a video anywhere that shows how to stitch the hdc into the back two loops? I can find a video for one loop, but not two.

    Thank you,

    1. Hi. I'm sorry to say that I don't know of any videos. I also don't have anything at hand to photo for a full stitch tutorial. But I have added a few hook placement photos to pattern. They are near the top, under Stitches used.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

  2. Thank you SO much! How kind of you to respond. If I can't figure it out from your new photos, I'll take everything to a woman I know who is an experienced crocheter. Stay tuned!
